God Is Always Guiding Us—We Just Need to Stop Resisting

I’m currently in the process of writing my book, A Book for the Broken Hearted, and throughout my journey, I've learned a powerful truth: God is guiding the believer's life more than we often realize. A lot of things may seem to happen in the natural, but it’s actually God orchestrating our growth, success, and everything in between. He brings the right people into our lives, even those who may not be there forever, and we must stop resisting His guidance.

Many of us, including myself, may have wondered, "How do we know when God is guiding us?" or "How can we recognize God's voice?" I’m grateful to say that I’ve figured this out, by God’s grace.

God speaks to His children in many different ways. As I’ve matured in my faith, I’ve learned that the primary way God speaks to me is through the Holy Spirit and His sovereignty. Some people receive visions or dreams, and through life experiences, they recognize these as messages from God. Others may get thoughts they believe are from God, but if those thoughts don’t come to pass, we have to consider that the enemy could be planting them. The enemy often speaks the loudest because we are operating in our flesh, and even during fasting, the enemy can try to interfere with God’s message, just as he did with Jesus.

I’ve come to understand how to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s guidance, and how it often confirms itself through God’s sovereignty, which I see in life circumstances. When the enemy speaks, no fruit is produced, and doors typically remain closed. For instance, the enemy might tell you that someone is your God-ordained spouse, but if the door is shut in that area, it’s clear that it wasn’t from God. Similarly, if you feel led to start a business, but the road blocks and circumstances make it nearly impossible, it could be a sign that God is preventing it.

Even when the enemy tries to derail us, God is always guiding us. When we believe God has spoken something, circumstances will begin to align to make it happen. However, when those circumstances don’t fall into place, it’s a sign that the voice we heard was not from God.

God teaches us His voice from a young age as His chosen children. I’ve also learned that our feelings are important when it comes to discerning God’s guidance. There’s a distinct difference between our feelings and our desires. I’ve been in relationships where I desired someone deeply, but my feelings were filled with anxiety, unrest, and a lack of peace whenever I was around them. The same applies to major decisions. We may desire something, but if it causes a sense of unease or anxiety, it’s a sign that it might not be in alignment with God’s will.

The Holy Spirit initially guides us through the feelings of peace or lack of peace. We often get that uneasy feeling when a decision or relationship isn’t right. If we ignore the Holy Spirit's warning and continue down that path, God will place obstacles in our way. If the situation is truly harmful or will lead us astray, God will block the path so strongly that it becomes impossible to continue. However, if it's a decision that’s not in God’s perfect will but He allows it to teach us to better discern His voice, He will allow us to overcome the obstacles.

Looking back on these experiences, I now understand that God was guiding me my entire life. At 28 years old (almost 29), I can confidently say that God is always guiding us. It’s up to us to stop resisting His guidance, because resisting His will will always lead to stress and anxiety.

God first guides us through the Holy Spirit. The initial feeling we get—whether it’s peace or lack of peace—lets us know when we’re out of alignment with His will. Thoughts can also play a role, but when God is speaking, His sovereignty will align with those thoughts. After the feeling or thought, we often see open or closed doors, or obstacles that stop us in our tracks. I’ve had personal experiences, like when I moved to Sacramento, where I felt a sense of anxiety, signaling that it wasn’t the right path. And soon after, obstacles started appearing to confirm that I was going against God’s will.

Ultimately, I've learned that God is always guiding us, even when we don't realize it. He is more gracious than we give Him credit for, and it’s up to us to stop resisting the flow of His guidance. By staying sensitive to the Holy Spirit and recognizing His sovereignty in every circumstance, we can confidently trust that He is always leading us in the right direction. All we need to do is acknowledge Him in all our ways, stop resisting the roadblocks, and be discerning about the advice we receive from others who are not led by God.

I think it's incredibly exciting to realize that despite my shortcomings, despite the times I fall astray from God, He is always there, always has been, and is faithfully guiding me back on track. Thankfully, I have a personality that naturally goes with the flow of things. This makes it easier for me to accept when things don't work out. But it also makes it easy for me to fall out of God's perfect will if something is pushing me in the wrong direction.

However, I’m so grateful that, as God's daughter, He has been constantly guiding me. I wish you could feel the excitement and the revelation of this truth. To know that GOD HAS BEEN GUIDING YOU—yes, if you are truly His child! Even though we make mistakes along the way, you are still aligned with your purpose. Keep seeking God's will for your life, and remain open to the doors He opens and shuts. He is always guiding you, even if you haven't realized it.
